Name Game

We are meeting with a woman from a Pittsburgh greyhound adoption group on Sunday for our interview. We are pretty certain we will be deemed "fit parents," so we've started to brainstorm for names.

So far we've considered:
Tut (Andrew shut it down--something to do with the Batman TV show from the 60s.)
Gideon (I shut it down, because... well... Because.)
Atticus (Still a contender.)
Gordon Ramsey (Still a contender IF the dog has a wrinkly forehead and penchant for cussing.)

After going back and forth for ten minutes with name suggestions, I suggested we pay homage to my childhood pets by naming our hound either Milk, Gum, or Hat--in honor of my first school of goldfish. Talk about a creative toddler!

Can I say something nerdy? the dog books I've read (yes, I've read multiple;yes, I am crazy) say that a dog's name should be two syllables. Most of the commands you'll be teaching your dog are one syllable so the two syllable name helps them differentiate between the two.

I vote Atticus because I love To Kill a Mockingbird, great novel!

Can't wait to see pictures.

Let's remember the name selection that we went through at my house:

1) Academy Award-winning Actress Susan Sarandon

2) Thor

3) Supreme Puppy of the Galactic Space Armada

4) Cornchips

No matter what you choose, it'll be better than those.

I love Atticus - his full name (for if/when he misbehaves) could be Atticus Finch.

Haha, the name Atticus always reminds me of The Birdcage, when the family is at dinner and they yell out "Agador Spartacus!!!"

I love the name Atticus!

My first dog's name was Oreo. I, quite creatively, came up with it as I was eating Oreo cookies. Yes, I was a genius.

I have no suggestions really, but a friend of mine named her kitten Ouchy von Biterson (the last of the noble von Biterson line) - so I guess you can be pretty creative with the name! :D

I can't wait to see photos!

I vote for Atticus! I love the name in general...and love the book even more! Can't wait to send congrats your way when you get your pup!

Gordon Ramsey is obviously the right choice here.

Someone else in the blogosphere has a dog named Atticus, that'll get me all confused.

How about Rabbit, Bounder or Bowzer.

What about going with the name the dog already has? If it is an adoption, generally they are old enough to have been given a name.

Eep! I love greyhounds!!! I don't know if this will help, but a friend of mine once had an Italian greyhound boy named Apollo ("Paulo" for short) and it fit quite well.
Really though, when I got my cat four years ago, I had a name all ready for him, "Miso". But when I got him home and really looked at him "Elvis" suddenly popped into my head. I think your puppy will name himself, in a way.
